The Zodiac in 2026: Eclipses, Retrogrades & a Year Written in the Stars

The sky has been busy in 2026.

Planets have crossed into new signs. Retrogrades have asked us to revisit places we thought we had already left behind. Eclipses have opened and closed chapters with their characteristic sense of mystery.

And we aren't finished yet.

One of the year's biggest celestial events arrives on August 12, 2026, when a total solar eclipse crosses parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Astronomically, totality will be visible along a path that includes Greenland, Iceland and Spain, while a partial eclipse will be visible across a much larger region.

Astrologically, the eclipse occurs in Leo.

And if there were ever a zodiac sign suited to a dramatic solar eclipse, it might be Leo.

Leo is ruled by the Sun itself.

It is the sign traditionally associated with creativity, courage, play, self-expression and the willingness to be seen.

Then, for a few extraordinary moments, the Moon passes between us and Leo's ruling planet.

Light disappears.

The familiar changes.

And then the light returns.

It's easy to understand why eclipses have inspired mythology for thousands of years.

For astrologers, solar eclipses are often interpreted as moments of beginnings, turning points and changes in direction. A Leo eclipse brings those themes into the territory of identity and creative expression.

You might ask yourself:

"Where have I made myself smaller than I really am?"

A partial lunar eclipse occurs August 27–28, completing the second eclipse season of 2026. Astronomically, it will be visible from portions of the Americas, Europe, Africa and western Asia.

In astrology, this lunar eclipse falls in Pisces.

And the mood couldn't be more different.

Where Leo burns brightly, Pisces dissolves.

Pisces is associated with dreams, imagination, intuition, emotion and the mysterious spaces that aren't quite as easy to explain.

A lunar eclipse in Pisces feels less like shouting a declaration into the universe and more like floating quietly beneath a sky full of stars.

Astrologically, lunar eclipses are traditionally associated with culmination and release.

So perhaps the question isn't "What should I do next?"

Perhaps it's simply:

"What am I ready to stop carrying?"

Of course, we couldn't talk about astrology in 2026 without mentioning everyone's favorite celestial troublemaker:

Mercury retrograde.

Mercury has already retrograded through Pisces from February 25–March 20 and Cancer from June 29–July 23. One more Mercury retrograde arrives October 24–November 13 in Scorpio.

Despite the famous reputation for broken electronics, misunderstood texts and chaotic travel plans, Mercury isn't literally moving backward. Retrograde motion is an apparent change in direction created by the relative motions of Earth and the planet.

Astrology gives that optical illusion symbolic meaning.

Mercury governs communication, information and thought, so retrograde periods are traditionally treated less as times to race ahead and more as opportunities to review, reconsider and return.

And this year's final Mercury retrograde happens in Scorpio.

Scorpio doesn't particularly enjoy small talk.

It wants what is underneath.

Secrets. Motives. Feelings. Truth.

That makes late October and early November an interesting time for reflection.

Instead of asking, "What should I accomplish?"

Try asking:

"What have I learned this year?"

"What have I changed my mind about?"

"What feels different about me now than it did in January?"

Then give your hands something peaceful to do while your mind wanders.

Mercury won't be alone.

From October 3 through November 13, Venus retrogrades through Scorpio and Libra.

In astrology, Venus is associated with love, relationships, beauty, pleasure, creativity and what we value.

A Venus retrograde is therefore traditionally considered a time for revisiting those themes.

What do you find beautiful now?

What brings you joy?

What are you creating?

What deserves more of your time?

And perhaps one of the loveliest questions of all:

"When was the last time you made something for absolutely no reason?"

Not because it needed to be productive.

Not because you could sell it.

Not because you could post it.

Just because you wanted to.
